At a July 23, 2014 event in Silverdale, Washington, Judy discussed the campaign to pass ballot measure I-594. The initiative would require universal background checks on all firearm purchases in the state of Washington. Judy personally attacked Jewish-American Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer, whose family pledged $500,000 to promote the passage of I-594. Hanauer supportsthe same policy that led to his family getting run out of Germany by the Nazis,” Judy explained. They registered guns and then they took them.” Judy continued, You come to this country and you support gun control.  Why did you have to flee to this country in the first place? ... If you don’t understand history, you’re doomed to repeat it.” The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle responded with a news conference on July 29, 2014, calling for Judy’s resignation. Accusing Judy of anti-Semitism, the Federation pointed out that their Seattle office was the target of a violent attack in 2006 by an individual who was “angry at Israel.” Six people were shot in that incident, one fatally. Additionally, the I-594 initiative would not require the registration of any firearms, contrary to Judy’s claim.

Testifying against a ballot measure initiative to require universal background checks in the state of Washington at a January 28, 2014 hearing, Judy joked about a murder-your-mom loophole while discussing the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting that took place in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. The phrase spurred immediate complaints from state Senator Jeannie Darneille, who said it was not humorous.” Additionally, a group of gun violence survivors who were in attendance delivered a letter to state Senate leaders, complaining that they were disrespected by Judy’s remarks. In the survivors’ words, the hearing allowed some participants to not only perpetuate myths about background checks, but demean our input and perspective as victims and survivors.”
