Biography

Herb Lanford is a former president of Gun Owners of South Carolina, the NRA’s state affiliate in The Palmetto State.

  • During a 1985 hearing by a South Carolina House Judiciary Committee subcommittee, Lanford expressed his opposition to a bill that would have created a seven-day waiting period for handgun purchases. Lanford testified to the subcommittee that, “domestic murders out of passion…are often committed with household items such as axes.”  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), out of 19,628 murders in the U.S. in 1985, 11, 836 were committed with firearms. Only 3,994 were committed with cutting or piercing instruments.
